Before extraction starts, the affected area gets checked for how far water has spread — under flooring, into walls, or between floors — since water that's out of sight still needs to be addressed, not just what's visible on the surface.

Extraction removes bulk water; drying removes the moisture that's already absorbed into materials. Skipping straight to fans and dehumidifiers without proper extraction first just makes the drying phase take longer and cost more.
